Through the power of community theatre, drama and dialogue, Global Impact Transformation and partners are challenging harmful social norms, promoting environmental responsibility and inspiring community-led action towards a more inclusive and resilient future. Global Impact Transformation (GIT), in partnership with Babawatoto Organization (BAO), continues to advance gender equality, social inclusion and climate resilience through the Tulindane Project in Kibondo District, Kigoma Region. Working alongside local government authorities, schools, community leaders and other stakeholders, the initiative harnesses the power of arts and creative expression through Community Action Theatre (CAT), drama and facilitated dialogue to challenge harmful social norms, encourage inclusive participation and inspire locally driven solutions to interconnected social and environmental challenges. Building on earlier community engagement, the latest activities brought interactive theatre performances and community discussions to four schools and two villages across Rugongwe and Kumsenga wards. Through performances depicting familiar experiences and everyday challenges, women, men, girls and boys were encouraged to reflect on gender-based violence (GBV), family relationships, environmental degradation and their shared responsibility for creating positive change. At the heart of Tulindane is a powerful belief: lasting transformation begins when communities become active participants in identifying challenges, shaping solutions and taking collective action.

Connecting Gender Equality with Climate Resilience

In many communities, deeply rooted social expectations influence household decisions, relationships and access to opportunities. Conversations about gender inequality, violence and harmful practices can be difficult, particularly where stigma and established social norms discourage open discussion. Tulindane is creating a different way to engage.

Rather than relying solely on conventional awareness campaigns, the project brings real-life community experiences to the stage through drama, storytelling within theatrical performances and interactive dialogue. By portraying familiar situations, the performances invite audiences to examine behaviours, question harmful practices and consider alternative approaches that promote dignity, equality and mutual respect.

Importantly, community members are not passive spectators. Following the performances, facilitated discussions provide opportunities for participants to express their perspectives, raise concerns and identify practical responses to the challenges presented. This participatory approach helps make sensitive issues more accessible while encouraging dialogue across generations and different community groups.

What begins as a performance becomes a conversation and what begins as a conversation can inspire meaningful community action.

The latest phase of Tulindane reached Kibuye and Kigina Primary Schools, Kumsenga and Kigina Secondary Schools, alongside residents of Kigina and Kukinama villages.

By engaging both educational institutions and surrounding communities, the project recognises that changing harmful social norms requires the involvement of children, young people, parents, caregivers, teachers and community leaders.

In schools, theatre created opportunities for students to reflect on respectful relationships, positive behaviour, environmental protection and their role in building safer and more inclusive learning environments.

At community level, performances encouraged residents to examine challenges affecting everyday life, including gender-based violence, family conflicts and uncontrolled tree cutting.

A particularly important dimension of the engagement was the inclusion of men and boys as partners in advancing gender equality. Their participation is essential in challenging harmful attitudes, encouraging shared responsibilities within households and promoting respectful relationships.

By engaging different generations and community groups, Tulindane is reinforcing the understanding that positive social change requires collective responsibility rather than the efforts of any single group.

One of Tulindane's important contributions is bringing gender-related and environmental challenges into a shared community conversation.

In communities where livelihoods depend heavily on agriculture and natural resources, environmental degradation can place additional pressure on households, affect economic security and deepen existing vulnerabilities.Through theatrical performances, Tulindane encouraged residents to examine the consequences of indiscriminate tree cutting and reflect on their responsibility to protect natural resources.

These conversations also provided opportunities to explore how household relationships, community participation and environmental practices influence overall wellbeing. Following the performances, engagement with village leaders and environmental committee representatives helped connect concerns raised by residents with existing local structures responsible for environmental management and community development.

Building climate resilience requires more than protecting natural resources. It also means strengthening communities' ability to make inclusive decisions, manage shared challenges and work together towards sustainable solutions.

The latest implementation phase has generated encouraging observations that demonstrate the potential of arts-based approaches to strengthen community awareness, participation and local ownership. Following the performances, community members and leaders showed greater willingness to acknowledge and openly discuss gender-based violence, family conflicts and environmental concerns.

Village environmental committees, working alongside local government representatives, reported improvements in community responses to uncontrolled tree cutting. Local stakeholders also observed positive changes concerning family-related conflicts. While these observations require continued follow-up to assess longer-term outcomes, they suggest that the discussions initiated through theatre are contributing to greater awareness and community engagement.

One particularly significant development was the revival of the previously inactive gender-based violence prevention club at Kibuye Primary School.

The renewed club creates an opportunity for students to continue engaging in age-appropriate discussions about respectful relationships, positive behaviour and prevention of harmful practices. This development is particularly encouraging because it connects a time-bound community awareness activity with an existing school structure that can support continued learning and participation.

The engagement of local leaders and environmental committees also illustrates how community dialogue can encourage institutions and residents to reflect on their responsibilities and explore practical responses.

The emerging progress reinforces an important lesson: the value of community engagement extends beyond the number of people reached to the conversations, commitments and local actions it helps generate.

For Global Impact Transformation and its partners, Tulindane reinforces the importance of approaches that recognise communities' experiences, knowledge and capacity to contribute to their own development.

The true power of community theatre lies not only in the stories performed on stage, but in the conversations, decisions and actions those stories inspire long after the performance ends.

Through Tulindane, GIT and its partners are demonstrating how arts, community participation and local leadership can contribute to advancing gender equality, environmental responsibility and social inclusion.
